04-07-2008: Class of '54 United by Miriam Buck
"Buck keeps high school class reunions on track"
By Donna Hilton
Published: Monday, April 7, 2008
*From the Daily Siftings Herald.
As is true of most graduating classes, members of Arkadelphia High School's Class of 1954 have gone their separate ways. But one class member has made it her job to get as many of them together as often as possible. Over the years, Miriam Hendricks Buck has diligently kept up with members of her class as well as many others who attended school with members of the class, said Jodie Welch Wyatt, a member of Buck's class.
"It has been through Miriam's efforts that all class reunions have taken place over the years," Wyatt said.
The class began by having reunions - all organized by Buck - every five years. For the past few years, the class has had reunions every two years. In addition to entire class reunions, Buck has also organized lunch once a month for classmates still living in the area. "We meet on the first Wednesday every month," she said. "We had 12 people there" this week.
In addition to organizing reunions, Buck serves as the "self-appointed secretary" for the class. "If I hear somebody's sick, I try to send them a card." It doesn't matter if the person was a member of her graduating class or another one, Buck still tries to keep in touch with everyone. "It started out for our class, but we've picked up others along the way."
As a way to thank Buck for her work, her classmates have established a scholarship in her name. The AHS Class of '54 Miriam Hendricks Buck Service Scholarship was created through an endowment with the Clark County Community Foundation. The scholarship will be awarded to a member of the senior class each year who exemplifies Buck's spirit of service.
"The emphasis for the scholarship was foremost on service to school and/or community," Wyatt said. "The role model for service to our class for the past 50 plus years is Miriam Hendricks Buck."
A committee of community residents and teachers, counselors and students at the high school will select the scholarship winner each year. Buck said she will not participate in the selection process.
As an endowment through the Clark County Community Foundation, donations are tax deductible.
Anyone who wishes to do so may donate funds to the endowment, Wyatt said.
Buck downplayed her role in organizing the reunions. "Everyone helps," she said of her classmates, especially in notifying each other about events. "We're a great class who enjoys staying together," she said.

The interior pages of this new online section feature a mini-website for local businesses; this includes contact information, a store description, as well as various images of inventory and the building site.
The underlying purpose of “Shop Arkadelphia” is to further inform area residents of the products and services available within our region of trade.
